The Doctors Company is currently seeking an Underwriting Manager for our location in Jacksonville, Florida.


The Underwriting Manager, under general direction of management and within authority granted, will effectively manage the regional office by planning, organizing, coordinating, motivating and controlling unit resources and staff in support of Company stated objectives of profit, growth, expense control, member services and staff development. One or more supervisors and a number of non-management staff in one or more office locations, and/or one or more telecommuters, may report to this position. Contacts are employees, company management, policyholders, vendors, reinsurers, IT, finance, patient safety, claims and legal professionals, brokers, agents, and members of the general public.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Accountable for assigned office’s underwriting results:  Collaborates with the underwriting management team, actuarial, patient safety, claims and others in the underwriting, production, maintenance, and servicing of assigned territory and book of business profit and growth objectives.  Assigned book may include Standard, Custom, Middle Market, Reunderwriting, PAR, PULIC and selected National Program business. 
  • Identifies company, department and regional office  opportunities/issues and recommends appropriate action(s) to address those opportunities/issues.  Implements, monitors, controls, and adjusts action(s) to ensure their effectiveness in meeting company, department and regional office objectives.
  • Mentors staff in the production, underwriting and pricing of assigned book.  Assesses individual and unit training needs and guides staff development accordingly.
  • Personally underwrites and maintains an assigned book of business reflective of the regional office’s overall book of business. 
  • In collaboration with underwriting operations and IT management, develops system requirements or recommends changes.  Directs staff participation in system testing, training and implementation and the reporting of system issues or problems. 
  • Responsible for human resource issues and practices for assigned staff, including but not limited to:  interviewing, hiring, training, managing, monitoring performance, providing performance feedback and job performance evaluations.  Addresses and attempts to resolve employee complaints and concerns, or refers to the Human Resources Department.
  • Attends designated meetings and recommends actions on behalf of the Chief Underwriting Officer, SVP/Department Head, as required or requested.
  • Performs other responsibilities as needed or assigned.



  • 5 years of Insurance management or supervisory experience, with emphasis on working with multiple staff and business teams, including underwriting and product development.
  • 5 years of commercial general liability or professional liability insurance underwriting, claims and/or product development experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Business or Economics
  • RPLU or CPCU designation (or in progress) strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of underwriting rating rules, policy forms, procedures and supporting administrative functions
  • Demonstrates leadership skills in organizing and prioritizing multiple responsibilities in a fast paced and changing team environment
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to travel and adapt to a flexible work schedule
