The Doctors Company is currently seeking an Underwriting Technician for our office located in Jacksonville, FL. 


Position Summary:


As an Underwriting Technician you will utilize both manual and system processes in performing a variety of tasks to assist one ore more underwriters in the production, selection, pricing, control and servicing of assigned business. Tasks include, but are not limited to, processing new business, renewal and transactional policy changes, premium invoicing, and policy or system documentation and records maintenance related to those tasks. Performs other duties as assigned.



  1. Utilizes both electronic and manual processes in providing administrative support to one (1) or more underwriters for an assigned book of business that may include Standard, National Program, PAR, Middle Market and Custom accounts.  Supports assigned accounts based on a working knowledge of market segment and account type.  Working at the direction of underwriter(s), may track or monitor sizeable accounts or uniquely structured programs.
  2. Manages an electronic in box containing tasks related to policies, billing accounts and their related documents on a daily basis.  Based on tasks assigned, processes new business and renewal policies, policy changes, and any billing transactions for those policies on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy.  Chooses electronic functions, such as “print”, to ensure that policy documents and billing statements are printed to a centralized location in Home Office for mailing.
  3. Enters data into developed processing systems such as NOVA, NOVA Policy Vista, and Documanagement System (DWS) with a high degree of accuracy; communicates results of that data entry to the appropriate parties as necessary.  For sizeable accounts, may enter rating data into an on-line rating tool or spreadsheet, following instructions provided.  May process Patient Compensation Fund transactions.
  4. Assists underwriter(s) in evaluating and reviewing new and renewal accounts, including but not limited to, obtaining renewal applications, obtaining licensing information, certifications and request and confirmation of other required information from agents, members, policyholders, policy administrators or other sources.
  5. Prepares routine correspondence and scans, right-faxes, e-mails, or mails appropriate member or policyholder documents, credentialing reports, and other related materials as needed or requested by the customer.
  6. Within authority delegated, responds to and effectively handles questions or complaints from members, policyholders, policy administrators, agents or other sources in maintaining and servicing assigned business.
  7. Maintains Documanagement (DWS) policy and billing files to Department standards. 
  8. Participates in projects, training sessions, and may mentor new underwriting technicians, as requested by management.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.



  1. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  2. Good oral and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to prioritize incoming requests while maintaining daily work assignments.
  4. Strong customer service and team orientation and the ability to work with diverse personalities.
  5. Proficiency and aptitude in use of computer information systems with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  6. Ability to travel and adapt to a flexible work schedule.




• One (1) or more year healthcare or insurance industry experience

• Good phone and written communication skills

• Strong customer service and team orientation, and the ability to work with diverse personalities

• Ability to accurately type 25 WPM

• Proficiency and aptitude in use of computer information systems with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

• High School graduate or equivalent 

• INS, RPLU or CPCU designation, or progress in obtaining such as designation, is preferred
