Position Mission

Working under the immediate supervision of management, utilizes both electronic and manual processes in performing a variety of administrative tasks to assist one or more underwriters in the production, selection, pricing, control and servicing of assigned business. 



  • High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • INS, RPLU or CPCU designation, or progress in obtaining such as designation, is preferred
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several set variables in standardized situations.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize incoming requests while maintaining daily work assignments.
  • Strong customer service and team orientation and the ability to work with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to accurately type 25 WPM.
  • Ability to accurately enter data from insurance applications, underwriting correspondence or instructions and credentialing requests into developed processing systems such as Nova,  Nova Policy/STAR, ,  and on-line rating tools or spreadsheets.
  • Ability to follow directions and department procedures with a high degree of detail.  For account referral purposes, must know the names and titles of key management personnel and have a working knowledge of department structure and reporting relationships.
  • Proficiency and aptitude in use of computer information systems with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Ability to travel and adapt to a flexible work schedule.




Customer Satisfaction


  • Responds on a timely basis to staff inquiries including underwriting authority requests.
  • Participates in company committees, operational projects and initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Develops in collaboration with other service areas, implements, and monitors service plans for accounts handled within the region.
  • Manages region’s relationships with brokers/agents and members, in collaboration with Business Development.
  • Oversees and manages responses to vendors and regulators in a timely manner



Personal Development



  • Works with manager to identify, and achieve, annual and personal development goals.
  • Completes training and maintains proficiency in key underwriting skills.
  • Maintains proficiency in underwriting systems.



Production and Task Management


  • Provides support to underwriters on their assigned book of business.
  • Works at the direction of an underwriting manager or underwriter to track or monitor policies.
  • Manages and prioritizes daily tasks and assignments to meet deadlines, agent/broker requests, UW directives and customer service standards.
  • Conducts policy research under the direction of an underwriter.
  • Prepares both routine and specialized correspondence or data analytics as instructed by an underwriter or manager.
  • Maintains appropriate file documentation and organization in accordance with guidelines.
  • Brings process improvement suggestions to management.




Underwriting Discipline

  • Adheres to established underwriting guidelines.
  • Analyzes new business submissions, renewals and policy change requests as assigned.
  • Recommends appropriate underwriting action on requested policies based on factors such as exposure, loss history and practice profile.
  • Follows state renewal strategy and ensures credits, debits and discounts are appropriate and within plan.
  • Refers accounts when outside of underwriting authority.
  • Monitors accuracy of all underwriting documents as deemed necessary by underwriters or management.

Other Duties to be Assigned

  • Works on various projects and assignments made by the Regional Operating Officer and/or SVP Underwriting.
  • Participates actively and provides updates to leadership on assigned projects within given deadlines.
