Excellent opportunity for an experienced Assistant Vice President, National Underwriting working at the nation's largest, physician owned medical malpractice insurance company.


This position will be located at our Headquarters, based in Napa, California. As Assistant Vice President, National Underwriting, under minimal supervision, you will lead the National Underwriting team in selecting, pricing and servicing a book of profitable complex, healthcare professional liability business for The Doctors Company. Contacts for this position are employees at all levels of the company, policyholders, attorneys and vendors.



  • Lead large teams of underwriting staff as well as staff from other departments.  High level of motivational and inspirational skills
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for marketing, revenue and expense budgeting, quality assurance, departmental organization and policy processing management 
  • Manage multiple office locations, telecommuters and administrative functions. Oversee underwriters to ensure that all risk is properly underwritten with appropriate pricing and coverage terms and conditions based on broker requested proposal, exposure information, loss history, attachment, limits and structure.
  • Manages large complex accounts activity. Assists and directs negotiations of complex risks.
  • Implement National Underwriting strategy as outlined by management and ensures risks underwritten are in line with stated risk appetite and structure.
  • Speak and present to large audiences of internal staff and external customers
  • Works collaboratively with National Business Development and regions to achieve production goals and target new business.
  • Adheres to established underwriting guidelines and ensures all staff is adhering to established guidelines.
  • Manages and supports the unit in an effort to achieve renewal business retention ratio goals.
  • Monitors and reports monthly, quarterly and annual growth and retention results to senior management.
  • Responds to staff inquiries including underwriting authority requests.
  • Supports TDC’s product development process by regularly providing input about existing products’ competitiveness and features needed for new products.
  • Provides input to Policy Development team as respects the changing nature of healthcare delivery and the resultant product needs and works with Policy Development in an effort to meet those needs.
  • Identifies new product needs and features that respond to the individual risk characteristics of the book under management.
  • Keeps current with changes to healthcare delivery models and insurance needs, and works with Policy Development to establish products to meet those needs within defined corporate objectives.
  • Communicates constructive feedback to direct reports as well as initiates and conducts annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Supports team development by participating in the Underwriting Department’s Continuous Improvement Plan
  • Ability to travel as necessary



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent underwriting experience, preferably in Insurance or General Business
  • Eight (8) years of medical professional liability experience
  • Five (5) years of staff, revenue and operational management experience
